Frontend Artisans

1Live frontend courses

The craft under the framework.

Frontend Artisans teaches the frontend the way a workshop teaches a trade: live, at a bench of 8, beside someone who builds interfaces for a living. React, Svelte and Vue — and underneath them, the HTML, CSS and TypeScript all three are made of.

Notes on detail A

  1. 1

State. The one number that changes when somebody presses a button. Each framework has its own word for it; the idea is the same.

  2. 2

Derived value. Worked out from the state every time rather than stored beside it, so the two can never disagree.

  3. 3

Events. What the person does, wired to what changes. The minus button stops at one and the plus at a full bench.

Switch versions and the balloons stay on the same ideas; only the syntax moves. Learn the ideas once and every framework after the first comes easier.

2The benches

Six benches, one workshop.

Each bench is a subject with four courses on it. The first is for people starting out; the last is the masterpiece the rest of the bench leads up to. Start wherever suits you — most people end up working at two or three.

3How a course runs

Measure twice, cut once.

Every course follows the same order of work, whatever the bench. Pick a mark on the rule to see what happens at that stage.

Before

Measure twice

Thirty minutes with the tutor before anything is paid, about what you build at work and where it keeps going wrong. If another course would suit you better, or none of ours would, you hear it here.

4What's included

The parts list for a seat.

Every course, at every price, comes with the same six things. Nothing extra is sold once you're in.

01What does a week on a course look like?
2 live sessions of 90 minutes with no more than 8 people, all in UK time. Between sessions there's a short exercise in the shared repository and one open bench hour for whatever got stuck.
02What happens after I ask for a seat?
You hear back within one working day with a few times for a thirty-minute call about your goals, the syllabus and the timetable. Nothing is charged until after that call, and only if you decide to go ahead — then we email a private payment link, or an invoice if your employer is paying.
03Which framework should I learn first?
If you don't know any yet, none of them: start with HTML and CSS from a blank page and JavaScript for the browser, properly. After that, pick the framework your next job uses. React has the most job adverts; Svelte and Vue tend to feel familiar sooner. The ideas carry across — the specimen at the top of this page is the same component in all three.
04I already use React at work. Is there anything here for me?
Probably more than you'd expect. The second and third courses on every bench are written for people who use the tool every day and want to understand the parts they've been working around. The masterpiece at the end of each bench is the hardest thing we teach.
05Why does every price end in 16p?
Sixteen pixels is the browser's default font size — one rem. That is the whole reason.
06Can my employer pay?
Yes, and plenty do. Put the company on the form and we'll send an invoice in pounds sterling with the details a finance team usually asks for, plus a one-page syllabus for your manager.
07Can I join from outside the UK?
Yes. Sessions run in UK time, so the evening slots suit most of Europe and the morning ones suit people further east. Everything is recorded, so a session you miss isn't lost.
08How do refunds work?
Email us within 30 days of your first live session and we refund the full fee, no reason needed. The details, and your statutory rights, are in the refund policy.
